To look or not to look?

Oh this is such a sensitive topic for some! For those that aren’t familiar with a First Look, it’s a special time that’s scheduled just for the bride and groom to see each other prior to the ceremony. It’s new growing tradition among couples so that they can have plenty of time for photographs while still being able to enjoy the excitement of the wedding day. This is deal for couples that have late ceremonies. Scheduling time to see each other before you are married allows your photographer plenty of time to get some great images without being rushed.

This being said, where did this tradition come from? I’m always interested in why we do certain things and why these things are part of our society. After a little research, the consensus seems to be this. Over 50 years ago, girls were considered property of their father until they were wed. Typically the marriage would have been arranged. The bride’s father would have offered some type of compensation (dowry) to give to her husband upon marriage. It seems that it was typical for a bride and groom to be from separate towns and there wouldn’t have been a chance to meet before the wedding. The tradition began because apparently one groom saw a bride and said no thanks and ran for the hills! To keep this from happening again the bride’s face would be covered through the ceremony and wouldn’t be unveiled until after they were pronounced husband and wife.

My stance on the subject is this…it’s YOUR wedding day. Ultimately you get to decide what’s best for you. In my experience, the flow of the day seems to be smoother if the couple sees each other before. Should you forgo this option, just be sure to have a cocktail hour before the reception so we don’t keep your guests waiting while we get the most important photos of the day….the ones of the husband and wife!

Keep an open mind when your photographer suggests this, they aren’t just recommending it for the fun of it. They have your best interest at heart so that they can deliver extraordinary images you both can be proud of.
